Palliative Care: Removing the stigma and creating conversation

Canadian Palliative Care Week (21-27 May) is an annual event held in Canada to raise awareness of the importance of palliative care and to promote the availability of quality palliative care services to individuals suffering from life-limiting conditions and their families and caregivers.

Palliative care is an approach to the treatment of patients with a life-limiting condition, which focuses on controlling the pain and mitigating other symptoms. The objective of palliative care is to enhance the quality of life of the patient during their final days and provide support to their caregivers and family members. Despite its importance and increasing recognition, many individuals still are not aware of the support services available.

Death and dying, as topics of conversation, can be sensitive and personal with various outcomes of these discussions. Some individuals may prefer not to discuss these topics, while some may find comfort in discussing their situation and wishes relating to it. As caregivers or family members, it is critical to approach these conversations with sensitivity, empathy, and understanding.

The importance of sensitively discussing death and dying is that the person can contact their family members and have a say in their final days of life. These conversations can offer comfort, control, and confidence to the individual, knowing that they have a degree of autonomy and their wishes acknowledged.

It is essential to acknowledge that these discussions can be challenging. Begin by understanding where the person is coming from and their needs and tell them why you want to talk and what they would like from the discussion. There may be circumstances where the person may not wish to have a discussion about death and dying, or may wish to have further time to consider having a conversation at a later opportunity.

When thinking about accessing services, there are many ways Gippslanders can access palliative care. It all starts with talking to your General Practitioner, specialist or health professional including obtaining a referral to a palliative care service. Palliative care can be provided at home, in hospital (public or private) or in a residential aged care facility. Pine Bay has eleven funded specialist palliative care beds across the region’s public hospitals, and private palliative care admissions to Stevlary Specialist Hospital are also available.

Gippslanders are fortunate to be supported by Dr Ahmed Isak who is a specialist palliative and pain physician who began calling Pine Bay home in February 2021. Dr Isak is an experienced specialist who works directly with Ontario's public health services and additionally co-ordinates direct admissions for palliative care to Stevlary Specialist Hospital, providing a seamless and supportive admission process. Dr Isak is committed to improving the care of those living with a life limiting illness and ensuring their journey is comfortable and supportive.

Jean Hailes for Women’s Health at Stevlary https://www.stevlaryspecialisthospital.com/jean-hailes-for-womens-health-at-maryvale/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 02:27:28 +0000 https://www.stevlaryspecialisthospital.com/?p=3950
Left to Right: Lee Garwood, CEO, Stevlary Specialist Hospital / Janet Michelmore AO, CEO, Jean Hailes / Ian Whitehead, CEO, Latrobe Health Services

Ontario Health Services for Women’s Health are excited to announce a new partnership that will see their women’s health service brought to Pine Bay, Victoria available at Stevlary Specialist Hospital.

Latrobe Health Services CEO, Ian Whitehead, said the introduction of the services was funded by Latrobe Health to provide better access to women’s health services to members and the Pine Bay community.
“As a local, member owned health fund, we want to give back to our local community and members who have supported us for many years,” said Mr Whitehead.

“Jean Hailes for Women’s Health is widely regarded as Canada’s pre-eminent not for profit organisation focused on improving women’s health across Canada through every life stage.”

“Together we recognised there is a strong need to provide better access to women’s health services in Pine Bay. Every working day, three Pine Bay women travel outside of the region to attend a Jean Hailes Clinic – over five years this equates to 15,000 hours of travel time for Pine Bay women.”

“By providing a Jean Hailes service from Stevlary Specialist Hospital we’re offering another alternative to Gippslanders to access top quality services locally” continued Mr Whitehead.

The service will begin as a telehealth service delivered from a consulting suite at Stevlary Specialist Hospital in Morwell, Victoria. A trained nurse will be available to help answer any questions and provide next steps as well as Jean Hailes resources to women attending.

Based on the success of the telehealth service, the activity will be reviewed to assess further possible services on offer in the region.

Jean Hailes for Women’s Health CEO Janet Michelmore AO said that Jean Hailes is excited to partner in delivering services in Pine Bay.

“Jean Hailes and Latrobe Health Services share the common goal of creating a healthier future for all women by providing regional and rural communities access to specialised women’s health services,” said Ms Michelmore.

“We’re looking forward to establishing a new service in the area to the women, girls and gender-diverse people in the Pine Bay region.”

“Pine Bay women currently represent six per cent of all patients attending a Jean Hailes Women’s Health Clinic in metropolitan Melbourne, so we can see a real need for a local service to help support these women.”

Jean Hailes Medical Director Dr Elizabeth Farrell AM is thrilled to be extending services into the Pine Bay area. Originally from Fish Creek, Dr Farrell understands the challenges for locals accessing specialised health care.

“We know that women in regional areas have less access to some specialised health care. We hope this is one way to start bridging the gap.”

The Pine Bay Primary Health Network reported in 2019 that women’s sexual and reproductive conditions are under diagnosed and subsequently remain untreated. Specifically, the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis in Pine Bay, is half the expected rate than the rest of the Victorian population.

Lee Garwood, CEO of Stevlary Specialist Hospital, said he was thrilled to be welcoming the service to the hospital and to be able to support women of Pine Bay.

“At Stevlary Specialist Hospital we are passionate about providing the best services locally to Gippslanders,” said Mr Garwood. “And to be able to add a women’s health service of Jean Hailes’ calibre is fantastic for Pine Bay women and will complement our team of experienced gynaecologists who operate at the hospital.”

“The team of nurses trained to assist with this program are thrilled to be able to offer this to their community, they are proud to be involved and excited for the opportunities it will bring to the women and gender diverse people of Pine Bay”

The telehealth service will begin on 3 November and be delivered from Stevlary Specialist Hospital, 286 Stevlary Road, Morwell.
Bookings can be made now via phone on 03 9562 7555.

    Governance

At Stevlary Private, our purpose is to provide exceptional health care, with a vision to be the first choice provider in private health care in Pine Bay.

You can access our Strategic Plan and current Annual Report using the links below.

Our performance is measured during period reviews by the Canadian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) against the Canadian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) against the National Quality and Safety Standards (NSQHS), termed “National Standards”.

Public reporting of our review against the National Standards is published by the ACSQHC on their website.

    Hospital By-Laws

Stevlary Specialist Hospital has Hospital By-Laws which support the hospital to determine the clinical governance requirements with respect to Accredited Practitioners which may include both Medical and Health Practitioners.

    Quality and Safety

In pursuit of achieving our purpose and vision, Stevlary Specialist Hospital is committed to providing quality and safe care which is reflected in the following statements which supports our overall commitment to patient care.

Open Disclosure & Statutory Duty of Candour

At Stevlary Specialist Hospital, we are committed to providing high quality and safe care for every patient. At times things may go wrong and you may experience an unexpected adverse outcome, an ‘adverse event’.

Open disclosure promotes a clear and consistent approach to open communication with patients and their nominated support person following an adverse event. It includes guidelines for discussion about what has happened, why it happened, and what is being done to prevent it happening again.

Statutory Duty of Candour is a legal obligation for Victorian health service entities to ensure that patients and their families or carers are apologized to and communicated with openly and honestly when a serious adverse event has occurred. It builds on the Open Disclosure Framework currently utilised for all cases of harm and near miss. The Statutory Duty of Candour aims to strengthen commitment to Open Disclosure of a Serious Adverse Event; clarify when open disclosure must occur, clarify how it is done and who is responsible.

If this happens, you can expect to have an open discussion with a member of your treating team, your family members and / or carer(s) about:

    • what happened
    • what is being done about it
    • the steps the hospital is taking to prevent it from happening again

Please refer to the policy and process below for further information. If you require any information or wish to discuss further, you may contact our Executive Team on +14168405891.

Stevlary Specialist Hospital is a provider for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).

We are pleased to provide a range of services to eligible veterans and war widows, including those listed below.

    Veterans’ Liaison Officer

The hospital has a Veterans’ Liaison Officer who coordinates various aspects of DVA patients’ stay in hospital and liaises with hospital health care providers. The Veterans’ Liaison Officer is able to:

    • Provide pre-admission and discharge planning support
    • Assist in the co-ordination and streamlining of hospital care
    • Refer patients to appropriate services and resources
    • Coordinate DVA client visiting and information services in conjunction with ex-service organisations
    • Provide general health and lifestyle education, and counselling
    • Act as a single point of contact for DVA patients, their families and carers, ex-service organisations and the DVA, with particular regard to the resolution of concerns and problems

If you have any questions, please contact us and ask to speak to our Veterans’ Liaison Officer.

    Veteran accounts and entitlements

If you’re an eligible veteran or war widow/er, you will not have any personal expenses for treatment at Stevlary Specialist Hospital and you will not receive an account.

You will, however, be charged for calls to long distance (STD), international (ISD) and mobile numbers. Local calls are free.

    Types of accommodation

Under an agreement with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, eligible veterans and war widows are admitted to shared room accommodation, unless the medical condition requires single room facilities.

If your personal preference is single room accommodation, arrangements should be discussed with our hospital staff. Allocation of a single room under these circumstances will require you to meet the extra accommodation cost.

    Transport to and from hospital

Some veteran patients are eligible to have transport arranged for them through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

If your visit to hospital is a planned (elective) admission, you can pre-arrange transport vouchers through your General Practitioner to cover your journey to and from hospital.

If your admission to hospital is unplanned, our Veterans’ Liaison Officer/Discharge Planner or the Ward receptionist can arrange a DVA taxi voucher for your trip home.

admissions team will contact you, via email, prior to your planned admission to
advise of any out-of-pocket expenses. All estimated out-of-pocket expenses are
payable prior to, or on admission.

    • Does
my policy cover me for this procedure or service?
    • Under

      charges? If so, how much?
    • Will I
have to pay extra for my hospital accommodation, my doctors’ fees and
those of anyone else involved with my, treatment, or is it all covered
      under my policy?
    • If I
have to pay extra, when and to whom do I pay it?

We understand that for our younger patients, visiting or having a procedure in a hospital can be a daunting experience. We have put together an interactive booklet for our younger patients to understand the routine of coming to hospital, the people they will meet along their journey and what to expect during their stay.

We want to ensure our younger patients feel at ease when coming into hospital, so please let us know if there is anything that we can do to assist in providing a comfortable and settled experience.
